Design Collaboration - Task 1
Jonathan Djap Tirtajaya (0337579)
When Ms. Zazila was a child she used to teach in a rural area, where there is no water there is no electricity, deep in the jungle. She has a history of cleaning of beach, but she learns that when she cleans the beach the next day more trash will come and it will be sent to the landfill and it will create more trash.
Questions to ask Zazila:
I’ve noticed that there’s a page called happy plastic borneo, since you have not mentioned to us about it; may i ask if that brand belongs to EZplast?
Happy plastic borneo was founded by 2021, it is a collaboration between 3 collaboration. Ezplast is the one who produce the product, another one handle the order, catering towards customers, and Tonibung maintains the machine that creates the product. Happy plastic borneo creates earrings, soap dish, clocks, stools and small necklaces, but ezplast focuses on furniture.
Do you already have existing furniture for sale? Do you have the pictures of the furniture that you are going to sell? Or are you going to just promote people to recycle and make their own furniture?
Ms. Zazila is currently facing a problem regarding the machine under maintenance, so currently she has sold all of her products.
*note that you can always get pictures from Ms. Zazila
Do you mind explaining again to us the process of how the furniture is made out of plastic in more detail please?
Firstly the plastic is sent to EZplast via their mobile recycling center, which is a make shift station from a shipping container. In exchange the community gets 30 per kilo and some 5000 points. (?)
Ms. Zazila mentioned that they first shred the plastic, and then process it into what they want to make. One of her struggles is that there is little awareness where very few people come to send their plastic, around 20 to 30 kilo is received every 3 days, and sometimes there are weeks where theres no plastic waste. (she said she can get 100 kilo worth of plastic easily at 7:03 inaudible)
She is currently aiming towards community in kota kinabalu specifically Kepayan. The mobile recycling center is located near the MRT and the main road, she is targeting the household near that area, but the mobile recycling center have only been there for 2 months.
Have the same people who recycled came back?
Yes, the people who sends her the plastic waste attains the livestyle of zero waste. These customers sometimes do a beach clean up and when they find the plastic that Zazila needs they give it to her.
Zazila have a suggestion where the product is managed under Happy plastic and uplifting the brand, but in terms of collection it would be under EZplast. Zazila would also like to recreate a new logo, Zazila didnt mind this change as EZplast is know for its name, and since the logo is just the name of the company she would like it if we have an actual logo.
The specific type of plastic that Zazila uses is 2 (HDPE) and 4 (LDPE). There is a misinformation where people would think EZplast is a recycling company, so they just send them their recyclables, even those that cant be used for making the furniture. But Zazila just sends them to a recycling center.
Have you seen any other organizations that turned plastic waste into furniture? How did it all get started?
What is the response you get when people see this plastic wood innovation?
I will need your help to define your target audience better. Could you please go to your Facebook page and let us know who are the majority of your followers? Or who are the ones who would participate in the activities you organized? Where are they based? What’s their age range?
What are your goals and expectations from us?
Creating brand awareness, catering for the community near the mobile recycling centre, and creating a logo.
If we were to brand your organization, have you considered rebranding it by maybe improving the logo? Or has these 2 logos been widely used and you do not intend to change them?
Yes, since most people know Ezplast by name instead of visual, Ms Zazila encouraged us to change the logo.

Instruction:
Week 1:
Get to know our partner Ms. Zazila. Ms Zazila is the president of SOSEA. SOSEA is a group of social entrepreneurs whose mission is to help the community with the goals of SDG. Zazila is also the representer for ezplast solution. The firm that we are going to work with.
Research:
Plastic waste can be used as an alternative way of wood. Founded in 2019 but when covid hit Ms. Zazila successfully made the prototype for the plastic wood. She also wants to use the profit to help the kids in Sabah. When Ms. Zazila was a child she used to teach in a rural area, where there is no water there is no electricity, deep in the jungle. Process:
A lot of the process relied on the interview we were going to have with Ms Zazila but unfortunately, she couldn't make it due to an emergency. So we had to deal with the information we can gather for ourselves.
Many of the research we did weren't the most reliable since the data collected were back from 2010, and 2017. This forced us to critically think about the limited information we have and to create a methodical assumption.
We created an empathy map based on EZplast based on the first interview.

User insight and need for people in Kota Kinabalu:
We divided the people in Kota Kinabalu into multiple sections
Figure 1.2 Audience division
We decided to focus on 2 specific groups: People who recycle in Kota Kinabalu but don't know EZPlast or don't trust it, and people who don't recycle.

Feedback:
Week 2:
We need to move forward with the progression, we have to plan our own meeting, and start researching.
Week 3:
We seem like we are on track but make sure is EZplast the manufacturer of the furniture or is it the plastic collector.
Week 4:
Great, Miss have no questions and is only waiting for Ms Zazila's response.
Next course of action:
Next, we have to start researching more about the demographic and the design solution that best fit Ms. Zazila.

Reflection:
We had a slow start at the beginning and Ms Lilian had to remind us that we have to be on time, and thanks to it we were able to realize it soon enough before it created a domino effect.
In week 2 after getting the interview the questions created more questions than answers but it also brought us closer to understanding the firm. In light of the information given by Ms Zazila, we had to plan another meeting with her as soon as possible to understand the demographic and our audience better. Since the data we found on the internet isn't updated and useful. Unfortunately, Ms Zazila couldn't make it to the meeting due to an emergency which lead to a very last minute critical thinking. Thankfully our team consist of many brilliant minded students that were able to ideate and understand the assignment quickly. I aspire to be as fluid in design thinking as they are.
